XP Deus and tone seperation
Quote from Brian.Tobias on July 7, 2020, 2:54 pmI really just wanted to post under XP as this was the only brand without a discussion. I have recently purchased an XP Deus and am slowly growing to like it and connect with what it is telling me. I do struggle with tone separation especially between trash aluminum and good signals (much like most detectors) I am a bit spoiled having come from an ATPro that at least had a bit of a lisp or scratch on a lot of high aluminum tones alerting you it wasn't a good target. Has anyone here came up with a good program with tone breaks, etc that behaves similar to the AT? Also, am I the only one that wishes that XP's VDI scale was adjusted down a bit, seems like there is no headroom distance between large good silver and iron when an indian head starts at 85-86 and you get to 95 already for a quarter, I haven't dug a silver half with this yet but I am afraid it will be at a 99. Seems like they would allow you to drop the VDI scale or customize it a bit...just a thought.

Quote from 67GTA on July 8, 2020, 8:47 pmThe tonal nuances are the secret to the Deus. It took me a few months before I could distinguish them because they are subtle differences. High tones from iron will have a forced sound. Aluminum, brass, copper will have a good tone but will be flat or 2 dimensional. Coins have a soft or whispy effect at the beginning and end of the tone. Watch some of Gary Blackwell's youtube videos. He tries to demonstrate the differences. You can fully customize the tones breaks and number of tones. I haven't tried to emulate the AT Pro tone breaks myself. If you know where the tones/VDI's break on the AT Pro, you can set the Deus up the same way. Gary also has videos that walk you through saving custom programs. I agree with you on the VDI. I usually ignore 97-98-99 unless it has that coin sound. The ones you want to pay attention to are the really deep 97-98-99 tones. The Deus tends to up average the VDI to the high 90's if a non ferrous item is at the edge of detection depth.

Quote from Brian.Tobias on July 13, 2020, 4:01 pmThanks Shawn for the information! I dug into this (excuse the pun, lol) further after posting and found out something crucial in the Andy Sabisch book that came after posting this. The VDI's change depending on the frequency that you use! I had no idea. In fact there is an option you can set in any program that allows you to normalize this so that they read the same between frequencies. Andy even lists side by side charts showing the change in VDI per the frequency used...kind of a game changer for me. Here is a youtuber that does a great job illustrating this.

I wish I had known this, lol. Always learning.
Gary's videos are great btw, I watched those probably a month before pulling the trigger to purchase my deus...he kind of sold me on it so he's doing a great job :).
Thanks again for replying Shawn, good luck out there!

Quote from Mike on July 14, 2020, 11:29 pmRutus has, normalization as well. I feel like the Rutus has a lot of great things from different detectors all pulled into one. Seek who is the owner and engineer has been metal detecting most of his life and it shows.

Quote from Brian.Tobias on July 15, 2020, 1:09 pmInteresting, I have heard you mention them on your podcast, glad you spelled out the name here. I had been searching for Brutus by mistake, lol. Looks like some decent machines and a great company.
I will dive into them a bit more. How do you go about buying those in the US?

Quote from Mike on July 15, 2020, 9:31 pmYou have to buy from overseas. A few guys I know have used eBay. No one who has bought one on my suggestion has been didsapointed. You might want to wait, they are supposed to be coming out with something new. I heard because of covid will probably be next year now though

Quote from 67GTA on July 16, 2020, 11:00 pmI've been watching the Rutus and the Tarsacci both. Waiting to see where I go for an upgrade to the Deus and Nox. Guess it's a good time in the hobby to have that problem. Next couple of years should be interesting.

Quote from Mike on July 17, 2020, 1:59 amAgree, seems like competition is picking up. I've had the opportunity to use the Garrett Ace Apex and the only problem I see with it is the Ace name which is synonymous with entry level. It's super quick recovery and will pick out the good targets in high amounts of iron and I'm told I'm trash as well. I only got to see it and use it relic hunting in heavy iron.
I think we will hear from Minelab again soon. Nokta Makro is working on a simulteonous frequency metal detector I would bet Garrett has more coming soon, Rutus is working on something and I think a manufacturer or two will respond to the Nokta Makro Simplex
